The week of his cancer diagnosis, his mother took him to the doctor because he was complaining of headaches and stomach pain. His original diagnosis was strep throat, but with his body showing bruising and petechiae – the doctor ordered blood work. That evening, after receiving the results, the doctor called his mother and told her to take him to the ER for more tests. At midnight that night, they received his cancer diagnosis.

Pedro’s parents have endured significant financial hardships due to his diagnosis, treatments and hospitalizations. His mother had to quit her job in order to care for him and they had to move-in with relatives for a time.
