Maria's Story

Maria (40) was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung in June 2018.

The cancer has metastasized to her brain. She is currently receiving chemotherapy and radiation.

Maria and Jose are parents to a 20-year old and a 16-year old. They also support Maria’s mother, Francisca (75). Maria had to stop working earlier this year due to pain that she thought was a pulled chest muscle. Jose described her as a healthy, active woman – so they assumed the pulled muscle was from work or the gym.  It wasn’t until the pain persisted for over a month that she sought the medical attention that would lead to her diagnosis.

Due to her prognosis and the effect the chemotherapy has had on her body – Jose sadly described her as skin and bones – he has worked less than part-time, so he can take care of her and be by her side. When asked what we could assist them with he stated that they paid off their modest home and vehicle years ago, so they could really use help with “utilities and food.”
